Parent Involvement
- Detroit Public Safety Academy (DPSA) will coordinate evening workshops for working parents to discuss the importance of basic household routines and rest. The academy will support these workshops using Title I funds and infuse the curriculum through its character education component with emphasis on the importance of a stable family life.
- DPSA will involve students in a variety of athletic, extracurricular, internships with public safety agencies and clubs so that students are not involved in self-destructive activities. Parents/guardians will assist by encouraging their child(ren) to join at least one academy-sponsored activity.
- DPSA parents will be asked to volunteer one to two hours a month to model the aforementioned so that their children can emulate the behavior witnessed in their parents commitment to the academy. In some circumstances, special consideration will be made for single parents/guardians and economically distressed situations where coming to school during school hours is not realistic.
- Parents at the academy will receive a steady diet of information regarding their students’ progress via email and mailed hard copies. Parents will be invited to participate on the School Improvement Plan team and to provide input on how best to improve student achievement.
- DPSA will provide an atmosphere that is warm and inviting, and where parents/guardians can discuss “the value of a good education and possible career options” by having access to professional public safety volunteers and academy staff.
- DPSA parents will be encouraged to be good listeners for their children at the academy and to support the academy by setting limits on television watching and electronic distractions. The academy will similarly support the parents by its commitment to a rigorous curriculum and high academic standards.
