March 16, 2020
Dear DPSA Families,
As you are aware, the Governor has issued a statement announcing state-wide closure of all K-12 school buildings for students in the state of Michigan beginning March 16 through April 5, 2020. The health and well-being of our families and community is our top-priority. We understand the concern and uncertainty you may be experiencing surrounding the Coronavirus (COVID-19) and we are committed to being responsive to the needs of our families as more information becomes available.
We are working to ensure that our students and families have the support they need. To that end, we are closely monitoring guidance from all state and federal agencies to ensure the safety of our school community.
In addition to following CDC guidance and partnering with local health departments, we have heightened our cleaning and disinfecting procedures to maintain a healthy environment for our buildings and busses. We have instructed anyone who is not feeling well to stay home out of an abundance of caution. At this time the Academy will be functioning with alternate hours of operation, 10:00am-3:00pm, with minimal staff to support the needs of our families throughout the day.
We are committed to ensuring that our students continue to have access to nutritious meals twice a day. DPSA will provide breakfast and lunch from 10:00 am through noon at the building at the Abbott side door. Meals will be pre-packaged and schools are developing plans to have the food quickly distributed to limit exposure risks. Breakfast and lunch will start being served on Wednesday, March 18th, 2020. If there are specific needs that you might have that we can assist with, a support line has been established and will be monitored by our team, that number is 586-307-5232. Please feel free to contact us there with specific needs and someone will contact you back.
Currently, DPSA’s teachers are preparing a variety of avenues for learning to ensure that education will occur during the closure. At this time all classes have been setup in google classroom and assignments for each class will be assigned there. Every student has been assigned a DPSA email address and password that will allow them to access their various classes. The format for that and link is provided below. Some students already have their passwords and access. If they do, there is no need to start over or reset. If they do not, a generic password has been assigned and can be used to access their classes. Once in they will be prompted to choose a new password. Please note that Comcast, ATT, Spectrum and several other internet providers are providing free Wi-Fi during this time. If students do not have computer access assignment packets have been prepared for them and can be picked up in the main office during the hours of 10:00am-3:00pm. Please be mindful during this time our goal is to minimize the risk and practice social distancing. So if your student does have computer access we are asking that be used as the primary source of curriculum.
For students who receive special services a schedule of service hours has been established for each student for academic support as well as social work services. In addition, accommodated assignment packets have been created and will be mailed to each home directly on Tuesday, March 17th, 2020. If you have specific information regarding your student who receives special services please note that the case manager assigned to your student will be contacting you before the end of the day Tuesday, March 17th, 2020.
I would personally like to thank the teachers and staff for their continued dedication to the students of Detroit Public Safety Academy. Also, thank you parents, for your ongoing support during these stressful times. There is no doubt that our DPSA family will get through this together!
